A Facebook user named Akshaym Lahoti has faced outrage on social media over his post which other users have called “Islamophobic”Lahoti, also an employee of HDFC Bank, wrote a post on Facebook which said,” A bunch of elitists decided that India should be a secular country and forced the idea on the rest of the country. Given a choice, I am extremely confident that an overwhelming majority of Hindus would vote against Muslims being given Indian citizenship”He later in the post added,” If a majority of Hindus decide against Muslim citizenship then Muslims should accept the mandate and move to Pakistan and Bangladesh, countries created for then at the time of partition”
A Twitter user named Uzair Rizvi opposed to this and wrote, “His post is both Islamophobic & Xenophobic His views reflect hatred, as a Muslim, I will have to think twice before using your services. People like him will be biased to me”.
He pointed out to HDFC bank,” Hello HDFC Bank this person Akshay Lahoti claims to work for you wants a referendum on religion”.
HDFC Bank’s Twitter handle was quick to respond and claimed that the organisation will carry out “appropriate action” and that they “condemn such divisive and insensitive comments”.
They also confirmed that Akshay Lahoti is an employee of HDFC Cares.
Users did not take kindly to this. A herd of users have announced that they will boycott and switch their banks if action is being taken.
A user said,” Hello HDFC Bank if this guy is terminated from services for a social media post & if he decides to come to me, I’d make sure you end up paying exemplary damages for wrongful termination of employment contract & restricting a citizen from exercising his freedom of expression”
